While the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in Nigeria decreased last week, the disease's death toll began to rise again on Saturday.
The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed late Sunday night that 33 more persons died from COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total number of deaths to 35, up from 35 on Saturday.
The most recent death toll rose sharply from 2,767 on Friday to 2,837 on Sunday.
According to the NCDC, 125 new illnesses were reported across nine states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), bringing the total number of infections in the country to 209,298.
The center also stated that 197,143 patients had been effectively treated and discharged thus far, with the FCT reporting a five-discharge backlog as of October 16, 2021.
Breakdown
According to the most recent data from the NCDC, the FCT reported 45 cases, with backlogs of 27 and 17 cases for October 16 and 17, respectively.
Kaduna State in the north-west is second on the list with 34 cases, next by Rivers State in the south-south with 11 cases.
In the south-west, Lagos and Osun states each had ten cases, while Oyo State, also in the south-west, had nine.
